Why is everyone Twittering?

Over the last couple of months Ive noticed a steady increase of news articles regarding the social networking website Twitter and figured it was about time I jumped on the Twitter bandwagon. This may be a mistake because my very compact and bijou Twitter page is now resembling War & Peace in volume since I decided to follow Stephen Fry.

For those of you who dont know, Stephen Fry is the 3rd most popular person on Twitter, with CNNs Breaking News stream in 2nd place and US President Barack Obama in 1st place. I first noticed Twitter in the News a few weeks back when the 1st pictures of the passenger plane which made an emergency landing in the Hudson River originated via Twitter, and since then its never out of the news.

So why is everyone twittering on about Twitter? Celebrities seem to love it, Stephen Fry has over 100.000 followers, although he admits to struggling to keep up with the sheer number comments he gets.

Barack Obama utilized Twitters social networking popularity as part of his presidential campaign and even Prime Minister Gordon Brown Twitters every so often, however Im not convinced http://twitter.com/GordonBrown is the same Gordon Brown none of us voted for.

I could just as easily sign up to Twitter with a celebrity name as any other name, or even with a famous brand name if I was to use the social networking site for online marketing purposes, which opens a whole new kettle of fish.

So, can a social networking website such as Twitter be useful for internet marketing? One cannot place a working a href in the what are you doing box, the urls are no follow; so no keywords and no follow equals very little in the way of link juice, none in fact.

However theres more to internet marketing than simply getting do follow links with anchor text from all corners of the net.

Internet marketing is not about increasing back links or page rank.

Internet marketing is about generating traffic and ultimately increasing sales. Twitter has a lot of traffic at the moment and as the old saying goes, youve got to be in it to win it, so why not contact us here at The Online Marketing Store to discuss how we can utilise social networking to market your products. You could also become one of our loyal followers on Twitter!
